When my daughter was heading off to her freshman year in college, I decided to give her the best advice I could find from my experience in life and leadership. As I have thought about these principles, I have realized that they also have a lot of use for those who lead.
So if you are heading off to college, starting a new job, or are a seasoned leader, here is my best advice for you.
1. Find 2-3 trustworthy friends in the first 30 days.
They will make the journey great.
2. Identify one solid faculty or staff member you can count on.
They will provide wisdom.
3. Stay focused on your goals.
Those who focus, finish.
4. Show grit.
It's normal to have some very tough days, but you can make it through them.
5. Avoid fools.
They are everywhere and are often dressed like sheep!
6. Seek help when needed.
Everyone needs it somewhere and in some way.
7. Guard your values.
Many drift at this stage of life and don't even realize it.
8. Make wise choices.
Ask yourself, "If this showed up on Facebook (or other social platforms), would I be proud of it?"
9. Show grace to others.
Like all of us, students, faculty, universities, employers, and coworkers are imperfect.
10. Never fear asking us for help.
